Cobalt Blue Glassware Collecting Guide
The Color Of Cobalt Blue Glassware
Blue glassware comes in many shades from the deepest midnight blue and navy blue to pale sky blue. Cobalt blue is the deep vibrant blue that is the most popular blue used for glassware. It is also the most sought after by collectors.
Clear glass exposed to sunlight will, over time, turn amethyst in color, but not blue. The deep blue of cobalt glass (also called Bristol glass) is obtained by introducing cobalt oxide compounds into molten silica in the glass manufacturing process. This requires only a relatively modest quantity of cobalt oxide. The molten glass remains bright orange hot color until it cools. The cobalt color can then be seen.
Collectors, as well as every day users, of cobalt blue glassware are drawn to it by the attractive color. But it also finds practical use in the chemistry lab where it is used as an optical filter in flame tests. Sodium is a common contaminant and burns with a yellow flame which the cobalt glass filters out. This permits the chemist to more easily see the colors of other components during flame testing.
Cobalt blue glassware and other glass objects are collected my many people with some accumulating very large collections. A fine example of cobalt blue is the bottles used in packaging Bristol Cream Sherry.
It is often difficult to tell modern cobalt glass from older glass which has historical or antique value. They are made in a similar manner and have a similar appearance. The collector should be quite discerning in selecting a new piece for his collection.
A serious collector, or a person just starting out, would do well to have one or more published guides to antiques and antique glassware in his library. The contain drawings, photos and descriptions to aid in identification. The best books contain drawings of the various manufacturers' marks which not only identify the manufacturer but also the period of production. Some of these guides are fairly expensive, $80.00+, when new, but many can be located used in very good condition for only a few dollars. While a new volume is always nice, we have to stop and ask ourselves if our intent is to collect glassware or books. Amazon carries both new and previously owned editions.
Condition of your glassware is important. You will find many pieces of cobalt blue glassware in second hand stores, fleas markets and garage sales and sometimes they are a real bargain. But examine them closely for chips and cracks. A little dust or dirt on these pieces can hide a multitude of faults. Collecting period and antique glassware can be a fun hobby. Having a piece with its true value not reduced by a chip is even more fun.
Take care with your purchases. Look at them as an investment because they are.
Collecting cobalt blue glassware can be satisfying in itself but getting out and meeting other collectors and attending various sales really adds a little bit of spice in your life. Have fun with your collection - that's the main purpose of any hobby.
